Third Swiss resident dies in Nice attack

A third resident of Switzerland has died from her injuries sustained in last Thursday's attack in the southern French coastal city of Nice, according to Swiss police.

The 31-year-old Brazilian woman, who held a residence permit to live in the Swiss town of Yverdon, was the mother of a six-year-old Swiss girl confirmed dead on Friday, according to authorities in canton Vaud. The second Swiss citizen to have died was a 54-year-old woman from canton Ticino.

At least 84 people, including 10 children, were killed when a Tunisian-born man purposely drove a 20-ton truck through a crowd gathered on Nice’s promenade by the waterfront following a fireworks display to mark Bastille Day in France.

The 31-year-old attacker was shot dead by police after driving for two kilometres. The Swiss Federal Office of Police External linksaid on Friday that it had activated its task force, with government and cantonal partners, in the wake of the Nice attacks.

Remembrance

Around 150 people attended a memorial evening on Monday for the Brazilian woman and her daughter. The gathering took place outside of the protestant church in the town of Yverdon-les Bains in French-speaking canton Vaud.

People laid flowers and lit candles as they paid their respects. Others left soft toys and children’s drawings alongside a Brazilian fan, a nod towards the mother’s heritage.
