Two airshow planes collide, killing one
Two small planes crashed into each other just before noon at an airshow in Dittingen, Switzerland, leaving one pilot dead.
The planes were part of a three-plane act at the Dittingen Air Show, near Basel. The event was interrupted to allow rescue personnel onto the site.
One of the pilots, a 50-year-old man, died at the scene. His plane crashed into a barn following the mid-air collision, but no one else was injured. The pilot of the second plane managed to escape to safety by deploying his parachute. His empty aircraft crashed to earth just outside the down of Dittingen, without casualties. The third plane in the formation was able to land safely, and was not involved in the crash.
All three pilots came from Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The cause of the accident has not yet been identified.
News of the accident comes just a day after another small-plane crash caused eleven deaths at the Shoreham Airshow in southern England on Saturday. On Thursday of last week, seven people also died in a collision of two planes full of parachutists training for an airshow in Slovakia.
