For the first time, five Swiss universities have made it into the top 100 of the Shanghai rankings. The respected list places 500 educational institutes from around the world, judging them in terms of research and academic performance.

The federal institute of technology ETH Zurich scored highest among Swiss universities, taking 19th place in the list and moving up one rank from the previous year. It was also the only institute in the top 20 that was not in the US or UK.
The University of Zurich ranked 56th, improving its position by four places on 2013.
The University of Geneva came in 66th, moving up three spots, while the University of Basel lost seven places, coming in 90th. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) squeezed into the top 100 in 96th place.
The list, compiled by the Shanghai Jiao Tong UniversityExternal link, looks at 1000 universities each year. The institutions are assessed on a number of indicators, including alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, high-profile research and publications, and the academic performance per capita at each university.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is another well-respected guide to how well universities are performing, and will publish its list for 2014 on October 1.
