Alinghi arrives safely at race venue

The giant catamaran, Alinghi 5, the boat Switzerland will use to defend the 33rd America's Cup yacht race, has docked in the United Arab Emirates.

The 35m-long yacht, backed by Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, made a 12-day journey from Genoa, Italy, to Ras al-Khaimah aboard a 193-metre Singapore cargo ship.

It arrived in the port on Wednesday, the Alinghi team announced on its website.

“We are extremely happy that the … Alinghi 5 arrived safely,” Grant Simmer, design team coordinator said in a statement. “We hope to be sailing again as soon as possible.”

The catamaran, supported by the Société Nautique de Genève, will take on Oracle Racing’s 30-metre trimaran BOR 90, sponsored by the Golden Gate Yacht Club, in February.
