Ammann soars to third place
The young Swiss ski jumper, Simon Ammann, has finished third in the first leg of the World Cup Four Hills tournament in Oberstdorf, Germany.
The 20-year-old from St Gallen reinforced his reputation as one of the world’s best by finishing behind Germany’s Sven Hannawald, the eventual winner, and Austria’s Martin Höllwarth.
The result was Amman’s fourth podium finish of the season and left him in seventh place in the World Cup standings.
Yet despite achieving jumps of 119 metres and 120 metres, Amman was critical of his overall performance.
“I’m not very happy about my first jump,” he said. “My landing was far from perfect. But I suppose getting on the podium makes up for that.”
Switzerland’s Andreas Küttel, who was also taking part in the competition, finished in 29th place.
