Anarchist given prison sentence

A leading figure from a left-wing anarchist organisation has been condemned to 17 months in prison for reckless endangerment by using explosives.

The Federal Criminal Court handed down the jail sentence to a founding member of the Revolutionary Structure group, Andrea Stauffacher, following a trial in Bellinzona on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old activist was found guilty of involvement in attacks with primed fireworks against offices in Zurich between 2002 and 2007.

However, she was cleared of counts of arson and possession of firearms and involvement in three other incidents. She will have to pay SFr6,000 ($6,690) towards court costs.

The prosecutor had asked for a sentence of four and a half years, while the defence called for a not-guilty verdict.

A group of supporters protested in court when the judge announced the verdict against the defendant who has had previous convictions.
