Mario Büchel of Liechtenstein won the race ahead of Austria's Hermann Maier. Another Austrian, Mario Schreiber, recorded the same time as Cuche.

Cuche was the only member of the Swiss men's alpine team to compete with the best. Didier Défago, Ambrosi Hoffmann and Marc Berthod all finished within the top 20.

The race came ahead of Saturday's World Cup downhill at Kitzbühel – one of the highlights of the World Cup tour.
