At least 16 people were killed in Switzerland in a “canyoning” river sports accident near the tourist resort of Interlaken, in the Bernese Oberland, on Tuesday evening.

“I can confirm that 16 people were killed and there are six others injured,” a regional police spokesman told journalists.

He said it was not a rafting accident as first assumed.

Canyoning usually involves a variety of activities, including abseiling through waterfalls, jumping into pools, swimming, wading, scrambling and floating on inflatable mats.
