Aufdenblatten leads Swiss to 1-2 ski wins
Switzerland’s Fränzi Aufdenblatten captured her first World Cup victory on Sunday, leading teammate Nadia Styger to win the super-G at Val D’Isere.
The 28-year-old Aufdenblatten upset the favourites to finish the Oreiller Killy course in one minute, 26.43 seconds, 0.23 seconds ahead of Styger.
Aufdenblatten’s previous best World Cup result was two third-place finishes in downhill races.
Lindsey Vonn of the United States was 0.26 seconds back in third to take the sole lead in the overall World Cup.
“Somebody told me that it happened after more than 200 races,” Aufdenblatten said of her winning drought. “It was the ultimate goal of my career. I really wanted to be the fastest one day.”
“It’s something we talked about 2,000 times with Nadia, and being on the podium with her is something unbelievable. There are no word to describe this. It’s a perfect day. I couldn’t dream of something better.”
The race was interrupted for about 15 minutes when Marie Marchand-Arvier of France fell heavily and was carried off the slope on a sleigh with suspected cranial trauma.
