Swiss hotel owners, hit by an expensive franc, recorded 0.7 per cent fewer overnight stays between November and April than the same period from the previous year.

The number of stays dipped to 15.8 million, according to the Federal Statistics Office on Monday. Of these, 7.1 million were Swiss.
While the number of Swiss visitors was up 1.2 per cent, foreign guests were down 2.2 per cent.
Swiss Tourism blamed this on the strong franc and poor snow conditions. It added that while mountain regions suffered, city tourism had increased in popularity.
Despite the minor drop, the tourist office pointed out that 2010/2011 was the fifth best winter season in the past 20 years.
