Basel continue home rule

Basel goalscorer Christian Gimenez sees a later shot saved by Lausanne keeper Pascal Zetzmann Keystone

FC Basel have climbed up to third place in the Swiss football league after maintaining their 100 per cent home record with a win over struggling Lausanne.

An opening goal from Argentinian striker Christian Gimenez after just three minutes was followed up by two strikes from Swiss international Hakan Yakin to give Basel a comfortable 3-1 victory in Wednesday’s match. Loic Chaveriat grabbed Lausanne’s consolation effort.

Basel had the chance to extend their winning margin even further in the 84th minute when they were awarded a penalty, but captain Oliver Kreuzer managed only to hit the crossbar.

Christian Gross’s Basel side have now won all six of their league matches at home this season, but have yet to celebrate a win outside of the St Jakob Park stadium.

Lausanne’s latest defeat has further reduced the canton Vaud side’s chances of making it through to the championship round. While just four points separate leaders Servette Geneva from ninth placed FC Zurich, Lausanne in 11th are now six points adrift of the cut-off line.
