Bern demo calls for “rainbow” rights
Around 1,500 people have demonstrated in front of the federal parliament in Bern for the right of homosexual couples to adopt children.
On Thursday, the federal court ruled against allowing a woman to adopt the child of her same-sex partner.
The court said it rejected the woman’s request since she has only been living in a registered partnership with the mother of the child for three years. Married couples must wait five years before they become eligible.
It is estimated that between 6,000 and 30,000 children in Switzerland live in so-called “rainbow families”.
Petitions have been handed into parliament calling for gay couples to be granted the same adoption rights as heterosexual married ones.
Switzerland introduced registered partnerships for gays in 2007.
