Animal rights group targets McChicken

A leading animal rights group, Swiss Animal Protection (SAP), wants McDonald's to only purchase meat and dairy products from animal friendly and sustainable Swiss farms.

SAP has started a nationwide petition to force McDonald’s to stop buying chicken, milk and eggs from foreign suppliers – imports which it describes as “problematic ecologically and for animal rights”.

The organisation said McDonald’s Switzerland imports 1,000 tons of chicken breasts from factory farms annually. These farms do not live up to Swiss animal husbandry standards, it explained.

In contrast, there are enough Swiss producers who could meet the demand.

SAP said McDonald’s is in danger of the losing the goodwill generated by its current campaign highlighting the fact that the beef used in its hamburgers is Swiss.
