Naples waste not welcome in Geneva

The Geneva authorities have decided against incinerating imported waste from the Italian city of Naples.

The cantonal government said the impact on the environment was not clear and there were not sufficient guarantees about the origins of the waste.

The decision comes after the director of the environment department, Robert Cramer, in January asked the public waste management company, Services industriels de Genève (SIG), to negotiate a contract with two firms in Naples.

Last month SIG announced it was ready to treat up to 90,000 tons of waste from Naples which has faced a crisis over waste disposal since December.

However, the plan prompted opposition by citizens and political parties in Geneva as well as the Naples city authorities.

Four other Swiss companies also held discussions with partners in Naples.
