The owner of a day care centre in the southern canton of Ticino has appeared in court on charges of child abuse.

The 64-year-old woman is accused of mistreating 71 children between 1999 and 2005.
The children entrusted to her care were babies and preschoolers.
According to the prosecution, the woman slapped and tied up the children as well as subjecting them to cold showers. In addition, she allegedly forced them to eat food that had gone bad.
An 11-month-old baby with a heart problem was hospitalised after vomiting and crying itself into exhaustion.
The accused, a divorced Swiss mother of two, maintains her innocence.
