Award goes to a woman of many words
The Forum for Bilingualism, based in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne, has awarded the 2013 Prize for Bi- and Multilingualism to Federal Chancellor Corina Casanova, who has served as the Swiss cabinet’s chief of staff since 2008.
Casanova certainly embodies the multilingualism of Switzerland, speaking German, French, Italian, English, Spanish, and two variations of the Romansh dialect.
A native of canton Graubunden, Casanova was chosen from among a dozen candidates on the basis of the engagement she has shown since 2008 in promoting linguistic minorities as well as better understanding between the country’s linguistic communities.
The Forum’s prize has been awarded seven times since 2002. The previous winner was the Circus Knie, in 2011.
