Curlers book Olympic spot
The curlers of Biel-Touring club will definitely represent Switzerland at the Winter Olympics after winning their fourth game in a row at the European Championships in Finland.
This content was published on December 11, 2001 - 13:56After winning the silver medal at the April world championships in Lausanne, Andreas Schwaller's team only needed to finish in the top seven at this week's competition in Vierumäki to make sure of a place at the February Games in Salt Lake City.
Following wins over Scotland and Italy at the weekend, the Swiss team enjoyed further victories over Denmark and Germany on Monday to guarantee their Olympic selection.
The match against Denmark, who eliminated Switzerland in the semi-finals of last year's European Championships, was a tight affair with the Swiss only winning 8-7 after playing an extra end. Schwaller's men then had to recover from a poor start against the Germans, coming back from 4-1 down to steal seven stones in the last three ends, to eventually win 9-4.
Women book Olympic place
Bern's women's curling team have also booked their place at the Winter Olympics after a series of wins at the European Championships in Finland.
They managed to overcome hosts Finland 6-4 and Norway 7-4 to ensure they represent Switzerland at Salt Lake City.
