Canada's Donovan Bailey made a winning time of 9.98 in the 100 metres at the Lucerne athletics meeting, ahead of American Brian Lewis.

Lewis, who was the victor at Friday’s Golden League meeting, came eighth, with a time of 10.61.

The Lucerne meeting is the third most important in the Swiss athletics calendar, after its counterparts in Zurich and Lausanne. The International Athletics Federation ranks it twenty-third worldwide.

Swiss athletes have had a chance to use the meetin to prepare themselves for the challenge of the upcoming Olympic Games in Sydney. André Bucher, with a time of 1.44,35 in the 800 metres, managed the time he needed to make the squad.

Sports fans have also been able to check out the stars of tomorrow, with the Swiss junior events taking place alongside those involving the hardened international athletes.
