Weber ensured his Swiss teammates at the Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City had something to celebrate when he stole ahead of the course to win the race with a flawless performance and bag the first gold medal of the tournament.

The 43-year-old paralympian finished the 7.5 kilometre race at Soldier Hollow a full 14 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Austria's Oliver Anthofer.

Weber, who has been paraplegic since 1989 as a result of a work-related accident, was also a member of the Swiss paralaympic squad in the two previous Winter Games in Lillehammer and Nagano.
