Fan trouble flares ahead of Basel game

Police in Basel detained some 80 football fans ahead of the Champions League game between FC Basel and Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Trouble flared in the centre of town during the afternoon, when a group of around 15 Basel fans, looking for trouble, attacked Munich supporters, the Basel prosecutor’s office said.

The police say they arrested about 50 German fans as a result of the ensuing brawl, while the Swiss made use of their local knowledge to escape and were still being sought.

At least one person was hurt in the clash, and had to be taken to hospital.

The police said their swift action had prevented things getting worse.

About an hour later the police detained a group of some 35 Munich fans who were marching towards the city centre, where they were suspected of planning acts of violence.
