FC Basel lose to Fulham

Switzerland's FC Basel on Thursday night lost 1-0 to Fulham FC, the London club now managed by former Swiss national trainer Roy Hodgson.

Fulham captain Danny Murphy scored the game’s only goal in the 57th minute to take the club to the top of Group E with four points. The teams are part of the new Uefa Europa League.

The Uefa match report said Fulham “shrugged off a sluggish first-half display and left Basel ruing the chances they missed when in control before the break”.

The loss at Craven Cottage leaves FC Basel with three points, tied for second place with AS Roma. Roma defeated PFC CSKA Sofia 2-0 on Thursday evening.

The Uefa Europa League replaced the Uefa Cup for the 2009-10 season. It is European football’s second-most prestigious league, behind the Champions League.
