Federer back on Open road
Switzerland's Roger Federer has returned to winning form at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, easing back into his game after a bout of glandular fever.
The world number one beat Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-2 in a 68 minute match and will next meet Nicolas Mahut of France.
Federer said he had not suffered any breathing problems, aches or pains during the game.
“I wouldn’t play too risky but I got off to a good start and could have taken more chances,” he said.
Earlier this month Federer crashed out in the Dubai Tennis Championships in his only first round loss since 2004.
Federer has only competed in two ATP events this season after contracting mononucleosis, a virus whose symptoms include fever, a sore throat, and swollen lymph glands.
The 26-year-old Swiss has spent a record 215 consecutive weeks at the top of the men’s rankings.
