Swiss tennis player Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal in an exhibition showdown on Tuesday at the Hallenstadion in Zurich.

Federer defeated the Spaniard 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in this first of two charity matches, raising SFr2.5 million ($2.62 million).

It was the first time the famous rivals had played each other in Federer’s native Switzerland.

All proceeds will go towards the Roger Federer Foundation (RFF). The bank Credit Suisse sponsored the event.

The RFF is a charitable grant-making foundation that supports projects in Africa – in particular those that benefit children. It is currently active in Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

In Switzerland, the foundation gives financial aid to athletic children from needy families

In a “return” match in Madrid on Wednesday, Nadal beat Federer 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.

The world number one described Federer’s gesture to play in Madrid as “incredibly generous.”

The Swiss star, the world number two, responded that it was wonderful that his rival supports charities “at such a young age.”
