Federer heads into ATP World Tour Finals
Roger Federer has beaten Spain’s David Ferrer 7-5, 6-3 in the ATP World Tour Finals semifinals, a victory that will propel him to number three in the year-end rankings.
After a challenging first set, the Swiss star stepped up his game in the second, breaking fifth seeded Ferrer in the first game and dominating the remainder of the match in London on Saturday.
Federer had won all 11 of their previous encounters. For the semifinal of this season-ending tournament he served up six aces to Ferrer’s one. Ferrer meanwhile made five double faults, while Federer avoided making any.
On Sunday Federer plays the winner of Saturday’s other semifinal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It will be the 100th career final for Federer, a 16-time grand slam champion who is also hoping to win the World Tour Finals for a record sixth time.
By reaching the final he earned enough points to overtake world number three Andy Murray in the 2011 year-end rankings, behind number one Novak Djokovic and number two Rafael Nadal.
The tournament brings together the eight best players in the world. Federer was the last of the top four ranked players in the semifinals, with Novik Djokovic and Rafael Nadal outplayed and Murray withdrawn after an injury.
