Australia has drawn level at 2-2 with Switzerland in their Davis Cup tie in Zurich thanks to a four-set win by Lleyton Hewitt over Roger Federer. In a match lasting more than two-and-a-half hours, Hewitt beat Federer 6-2 3-6 7-6 6-1.

Federer put the loss down to tiredness following an emotionally charged win over Mark Philippoussis in the opening singles on Friday and a hard-fought victory in the doubles the next day.

The tie will now be decided by the match currently underway between George Bastl and Philippoussis. If Australia lose, they would become only the fifth defending champions to go out in the first round the following year.
