Federer plays for Haiti

World tennis number one, Roger Federer, has come up with a novel way of raising money for Haiti: an exhibition tournament with the world’s top players.

The tournament will take place in Melbourne on Sunday, on the eve of the Australian Open.

“I thought we could do something to help Haiti after the tragic earthquake. So I spoke to other top-ranking players, and they all agreed that we could put together an event,” he explained.

“We shall play doubles or mixed doubles, and try to fill the stadium. People will be asked for a donation of ten dollars to come and see us play,” he said.

The Red Cross has put the death toll from Tuesday’s quake at between 45,000 and 50,000. The interior minister said on Saturday that the death toll could be 200,000. One third of the country’s population is thought to be in need of aid.
