Federer pulls out of Gerry Weber Open

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has pulled out of the Gerry Weber Open grass-court tournament to rest his groin ahead of Wimbledon.

Federer is a five-time champion at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament in Halle, Germany, and was the top seed, but said on his website on Monday that “my body, especially my groin, really needs a rest”.

“I feel that it’s way too risky to take a chance on aggravating it even more before Wimbledon,” he wrote.

Federer, 30 in August, lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final on Sunday.

Federer’s departure leaves Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic as the highest-seeded player.
