Federer through to quarter-finals

Switzerland's Roger Federer celebrates his fourth round victory over his Australian opponent, Wayne Arthurs Keystone

Switzerland's Roger Federer has booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros French Open in Paris after beating his Australian opponent, Wayne Arthurs, in four sets.

It’s the first time the Swiss number one has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament.

“The Grand Slams are the biggest events, so I’m really happy to finally play well in a Grand Slam”, said Federer. “It’s weird that it’s happening at the French Open.”

Federer’s performance in Paris has surprised many, since he is considered more of a fast court specialist with a quick temper.

“I have improved, I feel better mentally and physically”, said the Swiss teenager. “I don’t have fits any more. I think I’m more focused because of that, so it helps my game.”

Federer got off to a shaky start in the first set, losing his opening service game, and going down 3-6. He was quick to redress the balance in the second set though, winning 6-3 to tie the match.

“He [Arthurs] started very strong, making aces and taking a number of risks”, said the former Wimbeldon junior champion. “But I was not worried because I felt I was playing well.”

Federer turned on the power in the third and fourth sets, taking them 6-4, 6-2 to ensure victory.

In the quarter-finals, Federer will now face Alex Corretja, the Spanish clay-court specialist who ended Federer’s run at Roland Garros last year.

Twelve months after that fourth round straight sets defeat, the Swiss star is now keen to exact revenge, although he has already exceeded his own expectations by reaching the last eight.

“I’ll take this quarter-final, but it’s not over yet”, said Federer. “I hope I go further.”
