Female tennis players promoted
Switzerland’s female tennis players have defeated Sweden in a Fed Cup encounter and will return to the World Group II next year.
The Swiss took an early lead in Lugano on Saturday when Timea Bacsinszky (ranked 48 in the world) beat Johanna Larsson (ranked 79) 7-6, 6-1. Patty Schnyder (ranked 40) then defeated Sofia Arvidsson (ranked 83) 6-1, 6-0.
On Sunday Schnyder beat Larsson 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to win the rubber and ensure Switzerland will play in the eight-team group in 2012, one division below the best eight teams in the world.
Switzerland's next match in the Davis Cup, the men's equivalent of the Fed Cup, is against Portugal on July 8-10. The winner will play in the World Group play-offs.
