The Swiss Cup winners, FC Zurich, have avoided relegation from the National League A with a one-nil victory over FC Aarau at the Letzigrund stadium. The result caps a dramatic season for Zurich.

Dumped out of the championship round after fielding an ineligible player, the club subsequently sacked team boss Raimondo Ponte, before winning the Cup under the guidance of replacement coach, Gilbert Gress.

Aarau also preserve their NLA status, despite losing to a 54th minute strike by Zurich's Giorgio Signore.

The night's real losers were the canton Ticino side, Bellinzona. Their two-all draw away to Sion was not enough to win promotion for the ambitious club.

To rub salt into the wound, it was the last match in Bellinzona's red strip for star striker Kubilay Türkyilmaz. The Swiss international is joining the Italian side, Brescia.
