France upset Germany, Canada romp Slovakia

France upset Germany 2-1 and Canada hammered Slovakia 7-3 on Tuesday evening at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland.

Canada's Derek Roy opened scoring in the first period of that country's third and final preliminary game, held in Zurich, when he beat Slovakian goalie Jaroslav Halak while on a power play.

Shane Doan and Ottawa Senator Jason Spezza each added goals in the first period.

Slovakia's Tomas Surovy put his team on the scoreboard at 26:05 into the game but was countered by Canada's Shea Weber at 33:41. Slovakia replaced Halak with goalie Jan Lasak in the second period, who was promptly bested by Canada's Steven Stamkis.

Spezza added another goal in the third period. Marcel Hossa and Dominik Granak of Slovakia scored in the last five minutes of the game.

Canada next play on Thursday, in Zurich. Slovakia play on Friday.

French upset

In Bern, Anthoine Lussier of France scored at 3:50 into his country's game against Germany.

Buffalo Sabre Jochen Hecht evened the game less than a minute later for Germany.

Luc Tardif scored the game winning goal for France at the 16:48 mark of the game.

The loss leaves Germany with no wins in preliminary play. They begin play in the relegation round on Friday afternoon. France play on Friday evening.
