Fugitive gunman arrested in Biel

Police in canton Bern have arrested a gunman who had been on the run for over a week in the western town of Biel.

The man, who was caught in the night of Thursday to Friday, had fled his home after exchanging shots with police officers ten days ago, seriously wounding one in the face.

Switzerland’s French-language public radio reported the man had been bitten by a police dog but was otherwise healthy.

The cantonal police had come in for heavy criticism of its handling of the case since allowing the fugitive to escape.

Despite a massive security presence, the gunman had managed to return to his home the same day, taking further shots at the police, and escaping a second time.

The incident was reportedly sparked by the impending forced sale by auction of the 67-year-old man’s home. A search of the house turned up weapons and a large sum of money.
