Gagliardi back to winning ways

Swiss women's number three Emmanuelle Gagliardi has made a good start to the WTA tournament in Dubai, downing Australia's Nicole Pratt in straight sets.

The 25-year-old Genevan won Tuesday’s first round match 6-4, 6-3 to set up a challenging second round encounter with French third seed Amélie Mauresmo.

The win over Pratt was Gagliardi’s first since her surprise victory over Russia’s Elena Likhovtseva in the opening round of January’s Australian Open.

The Swiss has since suffered first round exits in Paris and Doha.

Mauresmo, who received a bye into the Dubai second round, is in slightly stronger form than her Swiss opponent. The French world number ten reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open before suffering semi-final defeats in both Paris and Antwerp.
