Gagliardi out after first-round defeat

The Swiss tennis player, Emmanuelle Gagliardi, has crashed out of the first round of the WTA tournament in Charleston.

The world number 45 from Geneva was defeated in three sets by her American opponent Jennifer Hopkins, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the $1.2 million tournament in South Carolina.

The Swiss tennis player Marie-Gaïané Mikaelian has reached the second round of the tournament in Charleston by beating the Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Mikaelian will face the Croatian Iva Majoli in the next round.

Myriam Casanova from canton Vaud has landed an amazing victory by also defeating an Italian player in the WTA tournament in Budapest.

The 16-year-old rising star beat the world number 144 Valentina Sassi 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 and will next face the Croatian Jelen Kostanic.
