A spokesperson for the police in Madrid confirmed the numbers affected, adding that four further people suffered light injuries. Sixteen tourists and a tour guide, all Swiss, and a Spanish driver were on board the minibus, run by Lucerne-based travel operator Baumeler Reisen.

The injured have been taken to two hospitals in the city of Las Palmas on the island.

The reasons for the crash are not yet known. Investigations are currently under way.

In a statement, the Swiss travel firm said: “The bus company contracted to arrange transportation is at the scene of the incident…according to the company, a new minibus was involved.”

It added that a care-team was on its way to the island to assist those involved.

The firm providing transport for the tour group was a Spanish bus operator.
