Hingis crashes out of Amelia Island tournament

Hingis had lost only once before to Sanchez-Vicario Keystone

Switzerland’s Martina Hingis has lost her quarter-final clash against Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the $565,000 Amelia Island tennis championships in Florida.

The world number went down to the Spaniard 6-2, 6-4.

It was only the second time that Sanchez-Vicario has beaten Hingis. In their 16 career meetings the only other occasion on which the Spaniard won was on clay at Hilton Head in 1996.

Sanchez-Vicario has been in fine form recently, winning her 28th career title in Porto last week.
