Hingis moves step closer to San Diego tournament title

Martina Hingis took the measure of Stevenson for the second time Keystone

The world number one tennis player, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, has won through to the quarter finals of the WTA Tournament in San Diego, after defeating Alexandra Stevenson (WTA 111) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

It was only the second time the Swiss star had met Stevenson on court, the first time being back in 1999 when Hingis also defeated the 20-year-old American at Indian Wells in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).

Hingis will now go on to meet the winner of the tie between Australian hopeful, Nicole Pratt (WTA 74), and Japan’s Ai Sugiyama (WTA 48).
