Switzerland's world number one tennis player, Martina Hingis, has defeated Russia's Elena Likhovtseva at the $565,000 WTA tournament in Los Angeles. Hingis took the match in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.

Hingis maintained her winning streak on Wednesday against the Russian, with an eighth victory in as many matches. Likhovtseva has yet to win a set against the Swiss player.

The Swiss top seed, who defeated the United States’ Lilia Osterloh in the second round of the tournament, converted 78 per cent of her first serves and won four of seven break points against Likhovtseva.

“I started off very aggressive, always moving in,” Hingis said. “I think she was a little surprised by the tempo.”

Hingis has yet to win the Los Angeles tournament despite four previous attempts.
