Hingis through to Tokyo final
Martina Hingis is one match away from clinching Tokyo's Pan Pacific Open title for the third year in a row, after completing a three sets semifinal win over Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva.
After taking the first set 6-3, the world number one seemed to lose her way in the second set.
Throwing it away 1-6, Hingis later said that she had decided to concentrate her efforts on the deciding third set. “I just hoped that I would wake up,” she added.
Wake up she certainly did, taking the third set to love and clinching the match with an ace.
Standing in the way of Hingis’s bid for the title will be her old foe Lindsay Davenport. Sunday’s final offers the Swiss player the chance to draw level in head to head meetings with the American.
Davenport has won 12 of their 23 meetings so far, with Hingis taking the other 11. Both players are also looking to get back on track after their shock Australian Open defeats at the hands of Jennifer Capriati.
