Horses crushed by train spur delays

Rail service in western Switzerland was delayed for an hour on Monday morning after a train slammed into three horses that had wandered onto the tracks.

The animals did not survive the impact, which occurred around 6.30am between Romont, canton Fribourg, and Palézieux, canton Vaud.

The Intercity train had left Fribourg and was bound for St Gallen when it struck the animals.

Trains travelling between Geneva and Zurich via Lausanne had to be redirected but service was back on schedule one hour later, Swiss Federal Railways said.
