Hug celebrates unique win
St Gallen's Reto Hug has won the Lausanne stage of triathlon's World Cup, becoming the first Swiss man ever to clinch victory on the World Cup tour.
The 26-year-old from Buchs completed Saturday’s race over the Olympic distance (1,5 kilometre swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run) six seconds faster than Australian former world champion Chris McCormack and ten seconds ahead of New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty.
Hug’s previous best achievements in the triathlon were his win at the 1999 European Championships along with his eighth place finish and accompanying diploma at last year’s Sydney Olympics.
In the women’s race, Swiss Olympic gold medallist Brigitte McMahon continued her impressive comeback to international competition with a fourth place finish. Just three months after giving birth to her second child, McMahon came in just over a minute and a half behind American star Siri Lindley, who celebrated her seventh world title of the year in Lausanne.
Holland’s Wieke Hoogzaad and Germany’s Anja Dittmer came in second and third respectively, completing an identical podium line-up to last week’s World Cup race in Tiszaujvaros.
