My favourite places to unwind in Zurich

Some people unwind with music, parties, social gatherings, meditation, or travel. My way of relaxing is connecting with my surroundings and nature around me.

Here are a few places that I retreat to find solace:

Katzensee

Shubhangi Makkar

This is a lakeExternal link in the Affoltern area (district 11) of Zurich. It is a five-minute walk from my dorm and is the best place to get rid of stress. I usually go there to witness a beautiful sunset reflected on the lake while listening to some nice music. It can get a little crowded in summer as people love swimming there. However, it is an amazing place if you can find a free corner somewhere. You might even see some cute horses if you are lucky.

ETH Zurich’s Sports Center

If you want to relax or improve your blood circulation, then this is the place to beExternal link. You can download the app or check their website for timings for the schedule of different sports and activities. I enjoy doing Zumba and trying out some other dance forms whenever I want to be active in between lectures.

Library in the HCI building at ETH Hönggerberg

This library is the best place to work. You get good amount of natural light and a huge working space. You will also find comfortable couches where you can sleep or take a nap. It definitely is one of my favourite libraries to work in, with a view of the fields behind.

Field behind ETH Hönggerberg Campus

The area behind the ETH Hönggerberg campus (towards the Student Village side) is an amazing place to have lunch or a coffee after lunch. It gives you a scenic view with mountains, curving roads, cows and green fields. It is an amazing place to take in some fresh air.

Student Project House

It is also one of my favourite places because it allows you to take a break from your everyday coursework and try out a completely different project. It is open throughout the day with great working space and also has a mini kitchen with free coffee and tea. You can go on one of the open days where people explain their projects and you can join one of themExternal link if you feel like. If you have an idea of your own, then that works too! It definitely is a great place to be.

Other Options

In addition, there are plenty of options in the international city of Zurich. You can head out to cafés, parks, public libraries, and open spaces. If you’re up for a challenge, then you can head to UetlibergExternal link where you can take a hike and immerse yourself in nature.
