Switzerland's Laciga brothers have had to settle for second place in the Gstaad Beach Volleyball Open in the Bernese Oberland. They were beaten by the American duo Wong/Metzger in the final of the Swiss leg of the sport's World Tour.

The Fribourg siblings battled for the title in a closely fought match narrowly losing to the American pair, 17-21, 20-22.

The match was the second time the two pairs have thrashed it out on the sand in Gstaad with Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger sending the Swiss pair into the loser’s table during their match on Saturday.

Paul and Martin Laciga were undeterred however by the American’s Saturday victory and made a feisty come back from the loser’s table by winning three matches in two sets and qualifying for the final.

The Swiss pairing beat the Brazilian partnership Ricardo/Loiola in straight sets in the semi-finals before they went head-to-head with the newly formed American pair.

“We played a strong tournament and we are satisfied with our achievement in the final”, said Paul Laciga after the match.

The Laciga powerhouse already holds the 1998 and 2000 world titles and came fifth in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
