Aid experts improve Philippine water supply

Swiss aid experts have helped re-establish water supplies in a southern region of the Philippines hit by a tropical storm in December.

A team of logistics specialists and water experts focused on improving the supply of drinking water to the residents of the town of Cagayan de Oro, according to a statement on Friday by the Swiss foreign ministry.

During the two-week stay the members of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit installed water tanks, handed over a device for analysing water quality and instructed local staff.

More than 500,000 people are said to have benefited from the operation.

More than a thousand people were killed in the tropical storm that ravaged the southeastern Asian region last month.

Thousands were forced to leave their homes and were taken to evacuation centres.
