Switzerland's André Bucher has taken the silver medal in the men's 800m final at the European Athletics Championships in the German city of Munich.

The world champion came in just behind the Kenyan-born Dane, Wilson Kipketer, who won his first European title in Munich, after finishing eighth in 1998.

Bucher had already reached his goal of qualifying for the final after spending most of the season on the sidelines following a foot injury. Before the championships, he had only taken part in one race this season in Monaco, where he finished last.

Bucher finished the race in a time of 1:47.43, just 18 hundredths of a second behind Kipketer, but more than enough to ensure his second place ahead of German rival, Nils Schumann.

Bucher was the only athlete to win a medal for Switzerland at this year’s championships.
