Human rights campaigner Safaa Elagib Adam from Sudan, who is active in Darfur, has been awarded a freedom and human rights prize by a Swiss foundation.

The activist came to the Swiss capital Bern on Saturday to accept the SFr10,000 ($9,829) prize, which was also bestowed on the community development association she founded in Khartoum.
The Freedom and Human Rights Foundation chose Elagib Adam for its 2009 award in recognition of “her fearless commitment for peace, human rights and decent living conditions, particularly for women in Darfur”.
An estimated 300,000 people have lost their lives in the troubled region since the conflict began in 2003.
The foundation also praised the Darfur native for her ethnic and political impartiality and her great contribution to the social improvement of underprivileged women, children and young people in Khartoum.
Elagib Adam is one of the 1,000 “Peace Women” who were collectively nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. The foundation has awarded this prize every two years since 1973.
