Davos qualify for Spengler Cup semis
HC Davos have reached the semifinals of ice hockey’s Spengler Cup after beating Team Canada 3-2.
The Davos team, the host and 14-times winner of the tournament, qualified after playing just two preliminary round matches.
Sandro Rizzi got HC Davos on the board less than two minutes into the sold-out game. After the Canadians scored the equaliser, Davos’ Czech players Petr Taticek and Jaroslav Bednar scored to make the difference. Canada’s final goal came from Travis Roche.
The loss was the first of the tournament for Canada, which will face Sparta Prague in the quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Canadians opened with a 6-1 win over Spartak Moscow. Davos also won their game against the Russian team.
The Spengler Cup, first awarded in 1923, is the oldest tournament between ice hockey clubs in Europe. It pits a Canadian national team coached by Mark Messier and composed primarily of professionals playing in Europe against European club teams on their Christmas break.
