Federer continues on course

Roger Federer cruised into the last 16 of the US Open on Saturday, beating Paul-Henri Mathieu of France in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

The world tennis number 2 was apparently unperturbed by the windy conditions 24 hours after the passing of hurricane Earl.

He now meets left-hander Jürgen Melzer, ranked 13th, on Monday. The two have only played once before, when Federer dismissed the Austrian in three sets at Wimbledon earlier this year.

Federer has not dropped a set in the tournament yet, and has spent a total of only 5 hours and three minutes on court.

Patty Schnyder, the other Swiss player in action on Saturday, was beaten in a close match against 15th seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

In the final set she lost a match point, and conceded the last point with a double fault after two hours 33 minutes on court. The score was 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

The only other Swiss remaining in the tournament, Stanislas Wawrinka, was up against the world number four, Andy Murray of Britain later on Sunday.
