World tennis number one Roger Federer has exited his first tournament since the Australian Open after losing in the third round at the BNP Paribas Open.

The Swiss star failed to win three match points, losing to 27th ranked Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Tuesday.

Baghdatis bent down and kissed the court after his first win over Federer in seven matches, later commenting: “Seven is my magic number.”

Federer played some loose points in the final tiebreak, committing seven errors that included netting a forehand volley to give Baghdatis a match point.

Federer has not lost on a match point since 2006 in Rome. It was his second loss in 13 matches this year.

Last month Federer announced he was suffering from a serious lung infection and was forced to withdraw from the Dubai Championships and the Davis Cup.
