Federer last Swiss man standing in Basel

World tennis number two Roger Federer is the only Swiss left in this year’s Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel after Marco Chiudinelli was knocked out.

Chiudinelli, ranked 76th, was defeated by the Croat Marin Cilic, ranked 14, 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday evening.

Like Federer, Chiudinelli is a Basel native. The two friends met up in last year’s semifinal at the tournament, which Federer won 7-6, 6-3.

The world number two will meet Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the second round of the tournament – this year celebrating its 40-year jubilee – on Wednesday at 6pm Swiss time.

Federer won the tournament for three straight years before he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in last year’s final.
